My Journey

I’m Margery Hellman, an experienced and highly qualified health professional. I am passionate about all that Yoga, Feldenkrais and Mindful Movement have to offer and am continually amazed at how these practices can transform our path through life.

Yoga has always been a part of my life; as a child my mother was one of the first Yoga teachers in the mid-western town I grew up in and encouraged me take up Yoga from a very young age. Yoga became an important part of my life from my teenage years helping me to manage the rollercoaster ride of my young adult life. A back injury in my late 20’s led me to explore The Feldenkrais Method and eventually train in this unique and highly effective method: teaching body awareness and mindful movement.

I have worked for over 25 years in the Health Care System as an Occupational Therapist and have extensive experience in areas such as Occupational Rehabilitation, Neurology, Pediatrics and Chronic Pain.

I have been teaching Feldenkrais for over 20 years and Yoga for over 12 years and have found a way of combining my skills and experience to support others on their journey toward less pain and improved health and well-being.

I am passionate about Yoga and all it has to offer us on our path through life. Yoga is medicine – low tech and potent – it has the power to support us through all phases of our lives; the good times and the hard times. Yoga keeps us grounded, mindful, awake and alive to be the best we can be.

When people ask me what style of Yoga I teach I have to answer that I am eclectic in my approach. I draw from many Yoga styles; ViniYoga, Vinyasa Flow, Satyananda, Restorative Yoga and Yin Yoga to name a few. I am also heavily influenced by Mindfulness practice and Buddhist teachings. So a real cornucopia but basically my philosophy is to adapt the Yoga to the student and slow the practice down to facilitate mindful awareness and relaxation.

I run yoga classes, private one to one yoga lessons and Feldenkrais classes for beginners through to advanced for students living in the inner west area including Annandale, Forest Lodge, Leichhardt, Glebe, Lilyfield, Camperdown, Stanmore, Petersham, Summer Hill and more.

“I initially went to Margery out of desperation. It seemed there was nothing I could do to prevent my back from ‘going’. I was seeing a Physiotherapist to relieve the pain far too often and pilates just didn’t seem to help. I began seeing Margery for a few private consultations and then joined her yoga classes about 6 months ago. My back issues seem to be under control and I manage and move my body with much more awareness. I feel a new sense of freedom and confidence and would recommend Margery without a moment’s hesitation“.

Yoga for Back Pain

“Since regularly attending Margery’s yoga classes I have seen positive changes in my body and mind. My limbs feel like they have lengthened. I have much greater strength and balance. Margery is aware of each student’s individual abilities and seamlessly adjusts her teaching so that yoga is available to everyone. As a student with a chronic medical condition I am amazed at her unique ability to create a home practice for me. Margery is a rare teacher who has great impact on her students.”

Yoga Group Classes

Margery's Feldenkrais classes are a big help to me generally in terms of flexibility and posturally. More specifically, they have been instrumental in my gradual recovery from a knee injury and subsequent surgery. I am now able to walk more easefully. The classes are friendly and relaxed. The movements subtle and gentle. There is no pressure to compete and is amazing how the slightest movements can have a lasting and powerful effect. I'm sure others would benefit from Margery's expertise and find the classes as helpful as I have.
